The 1874 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, minted at the Philadelphia Mint, embodies the post-Civil War economic boom and the California Gold Rush's enduring legacy. Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1849, this coin was the first $20 gold denomination, struck to facilitate banking and international trade. There were 366,780 pieces struck that year, reflecting America's industrial ascent.
This date is not an easy one to acquire in choice Mint State grades. For example, there is only one graded MS63 by NGC, while the finest at PCGS is MS64 (3 examples). Buy this coin, and you will have one close to the finest known. NGC has graded 209 as MS61 with 34 finer.
Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the obverse showcases a left-facing Liberty with flowing hair, a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," and 13 stars encircling her profile, dated below. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, shielded and topped by "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on scrolls, flanked by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY D." These motifs symbolize unity and strength, enduring through minor hub refinements until 1907.
