The 1841-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar, minted at the New Orleans Mint, features a design by Thomas Sully and Christian Gobrecht. Obverse shows Liberty seated on a rock, draped and holding a shield and liberty cap on a pole; reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with arrows and olive branch. This is a classic 19th century coin. This early type lacks the motto, reflecting its pre-Civil War origins.
A PCGS XF-45 specimen exhibits sharp details with moderate wear on high points, indicating extra fine condition suitable for collectors. PCGS has graded 47 as XF45 with 132 finer. Those numbers point to the 1841-O half being rare.
With a mintage of 401,000 pieces, the 1841-O is a rare issue. How so? Evidence suggests that significant amounts of Liberty Seated half dollars were swallowed up in the China trade. For example, PCGS and NGC have graded a total of 533 original examples of this issue, which represents a mere 0.1329 percent of the total mintage. Further evidence of such coins being sent to China is that hundreds of Seated halves are found with Chinese chopmarks upon them.
