The 1857 Silver Three Cent Piece, or "trime," represents a fascinating chapter in early American numismatics. It was authorized by Congress in 1851 to facilitate small change transactions amid a shortage of coins. It was devised for the purchase of stamps (which at the time cost three cents) and to replace the fractional Spanish American coins in circulation that were phased out via the Coinage Act of 1857.

With a mintage of 1,028,000 from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1857 is more abundant than later dates but far scarcer in high grades than contemporaries like the 1858.
