The 1798 1C Draped Bust Large Cent, variety S-167, exemplifies early American numismatics from the Philadelphia Mint. PCGS has graded only 27 examples of the Sheldon-167 variety. Of those, there is one in AU53 with 11 finer. In CAC, there is 1 in AU53 with just 2 finer.
Designed by Robert Scot, it features Liberty's draped bust facing right on the obverse, with "LIBERTY" above and the date below, accented by a prominent hair curl left of the ear—distinguishing it as the "Second Hair Style." The reverse displays an elegant laurel-wreathed "ONE CENT" encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Likely struck in late 1798 or early 1799, this Sheldon-167 die pairing captures the artistry of the era.
Graded PCGS AU-53 and approved by the Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this coin exhibits About Uncirculated details with even chocolate-brown coloration, minimal wear on Liberty's cheek and curls, and sharp definition in the reverse wreath and lettering.
