This 1798 1C Draped Bust Large Cent, variety S-183, is a striking example of early American coinage from the Philadelphia Mint, designed by Robert Scot. PCGS has graded 1 of the Sheldon-183 variety as XF40 with 4 finer.
This Sheldon-183 die pairing, known as the "Second Hair Style" displays Liberty’s draped bust facing right with a prominent hair curl left of the ear, "LIBERTY" above, and a distinctively small "8" in the date. The reverse displays "ONE CENT" within a laurel wreath, encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and 16 stars. Struck in late 1798 or early 1799, it’s part of the estimated 1.8 million 1798 mintage, with S-183 classified as rarity-3.
Graded PCGS XF-40, this coin shows Extra Fine details with smooth, chocolate-brown surfaces and light wear on Liberty’s high points, particularly the cheek and curls. The wreath and lettering retain sharp definition, rare for copper coins susceptible to corrosion. Its balanced strike enhances eye appeal, making it a standout for this grade.
