The 1921 $1 Peace Silver Dollar, struck in high relief at the Philadelphia Mint, marks the inaugural issue of this iconic series, designed by Anthony de Francisci. The high-relief strike, unique to this year, creates stunning detail but proved impractical for mass production, leading to lowered relief in subsequent years.
Graded PCGS MS-64, this coin exhibits sharp strikes, lustrous surfaces, and minimal marks, placing it in the upper tier for the type. The CAC green sticker denotes exceptional quality, surpassing typical standards for the grade and appealing to discerning collectors. PCGS has graded 4,961 as MS64 with 2,200 finer. In CAC, there are 777 in MS64 with 357 finer.
Upon its release, a newspaper in Philadelphia wrote, “Liberty is getting younger. Take it from the new 'Peace Dollar,' put in circulation yesterday, the young woman who has been adorning silver currency for many years, never looked better than in the 'cart wheel' that the Philadelphia Mint has just started to turn out.
