The 1887-S Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint during a period of high production for the series. With an original mintage of 1,771,000 pieces, it remains one of the more available S-mint Morgans in mint state, though far scarcer than its Philadelphia counterpart from the same year. PCGS has graded 2,122 in MS64 with 629 finer.
Examples graded PCGS MS-64 typically display strong satin to semi-prooflike luster with clean fields for the grade. Cheek and hair details over Liberty’s ear are usually well defined, while the eagle’s breast feathers show only minor softness from die polishing common to many 1887-S dollars. Light golden-russet toning often appears at the rims, with occasional scattered contact marks or hairlines that limit the coin to the MS-64 level.
Among branch-mint Morgans, the 1887-S is prized for its bright, flashy appearance and relatively bold strike compared to later San Francisco issues. In MS-64 it represents a solid balance of eye appeal, originality, and availability without entering the rarity-driven upper echelons of the series.
