The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar is a standard-issue coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of over 9.1 million pieces. PCGS has graded 1,462 as MS65 with 422 finer.
It carries the familiar George T. Morgan design: Liberty in profile on the obverse and a spread-winged eagle on the reverse. As a Philadelphia coin, it bears no mintmark.
This particular example has been graded MS-65 by PCGS, indicating strong eye appeal for the grade with clean fields, sharp details, and good luster. It shows some attractive, original mint bag toning that developed naturally while the coin rested in Treasury bags decades ago.
The coin is housed in one of PCGS’s earlier Old Green Holders, the style used from the late 1980s through the 1990s. These holders are familiar to and desired by many collectors. This is a solid, attractive, and original 1881 Morgan in a respectable gem grade.
