The 1940-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar represents one of the later issues of Adolph A. Weinman’s celebrated design, first introduced in 1916. PCGS has graded 1,616 as MS65 with 824 finer.
Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin reflects the steady production quality of the prewar years, when the Walking Liberty series had fully matured artistically and technically. Weinman’s image of Liberty striding toward the rising sun remains one of the most admired designs in American coinage.
David Hall writes in PCGS Coinfacts: “The 1940-S is the rarest Walker of the 1940s in both uncirculated and Gem condition. It is quite a bit rarer than the more highly touted 1941-S. The 1941-S gets more attention because of a holdover from the days of coin albums when the Walking Liberty half dollar set came in two albums, the 1916-1940 issues in one and the 1941-1947 issues in another.… However, the 1940-S is definitely rarer.”
