2018-W American Liberty High Relief G$10, Liberty Head, NGC PR-70UC
This is the fractional companion to the 2017 one-ounce American Liberty High Relief gold coin, struck as a one-tenth-ounce .9999 fine (24-karat) gold proof at the West Point Mint. The obverse, designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, shows a left-facing profile of Liberty as a young African-American woman wearing a crown of stars (homage to the Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol), with inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “2018,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse, by Chris Costello and Michael Gaudioso, depicts a bold bald eagle in flight, inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1/10 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD,” and “10 DOLLARS,” with the “W” mintmark. Measuring 16.5 mm in diameter with a reeded edge and high-relief details, it had an authorized maximum mintage of 135,000 and was packaged in a burgundy presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity. It offered collectors a more accessible version of the landmark 2017 design.
