1906-Dated San Francisco Earthquake Silver Medal NGC MS-68 Gilt Restrike
This is the official 2006 gilt silver (vermeil/silver-doré) restrike of the large high-relief Art Nouveau medal originally issued by France in 1906 to express sympathy and admiration for San Francisco after the earthquake and fire. It is typically about 90 mm (nearly 4 inches) in diameter—close to the 91 mm you mentioned—and the limited silver-gilt versions (solid silver with a substantial 24-karat gold coating) had a very small mintage of just 10 pieces, distributed by Talisman Coins with authorization from the Paris Mint. Bronze-doré versions were also made in a slightly larger limited run.
Key details from auction and contemporary reports:
- Paris Mint / Monnaie de Paris production, dated 1906 on the medal but restruck in 2006 from the original dies.
- Designed/sculpted by L.A. Bottée (Louis Alexandre Bottée, 1852–1941).
- Obverse: personification of San Francisco rising from the ruins (with a radiant star and oak sapling symbolizing recovery); reverse: Marianne offering an olive branch across the ocean to an American eagle with shield.
Note that there are also earlier restrikes (e.g., some dated around 1969 or listed as 1997 in one graded example) and original-period strikes in bronze or silver, but the specific 2006 gilt silver restrike is the Monnaie de Paris centennial issue.
