1856 $10 Liberty Head Eagle NGC AU-55 Ex.SS Republic
Recovered from the S.S. Republic. Of the 60,490 eagles minted in 1856, Mint delivery records indicate that roughly half were delivered on February 29 (Leap Day). The balance was produced during the final week of May and the first two weeks of June. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth describe the issue as “scarce, but not rare.”
This exact shipwreck example sold as lot 3162 in Heritage’s September 12, 2024 Long Beach auction sale for $3,960. With gold then trading near $2,567 per ounce, this coin realized slightly over three times melt. At a current spot price near $4,195, a comparable multiple would imply a current auction value in excess of $13,000.
