1803 $10 Draped Bust Small Eagle NGC AU-50
1803 Capped Bust Right Eagle
BD-1 (Taraszka-26). Small Reverse Stars. Rarity-5+
The Philadelphia Mint recorded 15,017 Capped Bust Right eagles for 1803, all from a single hardy obverse paired with six different reverses. Reverse failure was a constant problem, and several of those marriages are scarce to rare today. Only BD-3 is relatively available. This coin is the first marriage in the sequence, BD-1, estimated at just 30 to 40 survivors in all grades.
BD-1 uses the obverse in its earliest state and the reverse in its only known pairing. Both dies are essentially perfect. A diagnostic die line between T and A of STATES, left from die preparation, identifies the reverse at a glance.
This is a handsome Select example with nearly Choice About Uncirculated quality. The peripheries are sharply defined; the centers show only the expected touch of softness in Liberty’s hair and on the eagle’s breast. Gleaming medium to orange-gold surfaces retain substantial original mint luster. Contact is limited to scattered, minor marks from a brief time in circulation. Eye appeal is outstanding.
Scarcity, early-die character, and strong visual quality come together here. An important opportunity for a collector of early U.S. gold.
