Henry of Navarre became Henry IV in 1589 but spent the early 1590s fighting the League for the kingdom. He converted to Catholicism in 1593 (“Paris is well worth a Mass”) and gradually recovered the major cities; the Edict of Nantes (1598) still lay ahead. War, disrupted trade, and earlier debasements left the monetary system disordered. The crown needed large volumes of small change to pay troops and restore everyday commerce while it reconquered territory.The coin.
Henry IV kept the two-H design but changed the legend to HENRICVS IIII … FRAN ET NAVA REX. Several subtypes exist: four crowns on the reverse; mixed crowns and lilies; and Dauphiné pieces with dolphins. Weights on surviving coins commonly run 1.9–2.8 g. Output surged in 1593–96 at both regular and short-lived mints (Riom, Sisteron, Maringues, Melun, etc.). An ordinance of 1596 later curtailed further striking. Like earlier issues, these circulated hard and are rarely found in high grade. Many later received the 1640 lis countermark that revalued old douzains at 15 deniers.
