Charlotte and Dahlonega gold has long commanded special attention from collectors. After a fire closed the Charlotte Mint on July 28, 1844, the facility reopened in 1846 and struck only 4,808 quarter eagles—a scarce, low-mintage issue that, with the half eagle of the same year, remains one of the more poorly produced products of that mint. Dies shipped in 1844 sat unused until operations resumed and rusted in the interval, leaving this example with a sharp but irregular strike and numerous areas of mint-made granularity. Typical 1846-C quarter eagles grade VF to EF; AU pieces are more elusive and Mint State coins are rare.
This PCGS MS-60 specimen shows a bright yellow-gold hue with underlying luster still clearly evident within and around the rust marks from the original die. A few light marks in the fields are well scattered which accounts for the MS60 grade. Of the original mintage, perhaps 125 coins survive in all. The 1846-C ranks as the third-rarest Charlotte quarter eagle in higher grades, with only about six to eight Uncirculated pieces known. The finest is the PCGS MS64 ex Bass II (lot 381); the Dingler coin is tied with an NGC MS63 ex Elrod for second finest. An important Mint State representative of a classic branch-mint rarity.
