Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the early years of John Reich’s Capped Bust series, this half dollar was produced during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, just before James Madison’s 1809 inauguration. The well-known 1808/7 overdate resulted from reusing an unused 1807 die, a practical response to die-steel shortages. These large silver pieces were vital circulating coins in the young nation, bridging the earlier Draped Bust type and the long Capped Bust series that continued into the 1830s.
