The 1861 Liberty Seated Half Dollar proof issue entered production with a reported mintage of 1,000 pieces, although demand proved far lower than anticipated. Mint records indicate that many unsold examples were later melted, leaving a net distribution of only 400 pieces in 1861. That small release instantly established the date as one of the scarcer Proof Liberty Seated Half Dollars of the Civil War era.
Today, survivors are believed to number well under half of the original 400 coins distributed. Combined certification records from NGC and PCGS list 244 examples graded, though the true population is certainly lower because important rarities of this caliber often reappear through repeated submissions and crossovers between services. NGC has graded 17 as Gem Proof-65 with 9 finer.
The coin displays the deeply mirrored fields and sharply impressed detail expected of a carefully preserved mid-19th century proof striking.
