The 1987 Gold American Eagle 2-piece Proof Set is a distinctive early issue in the series, pairing two beautifully struck coins: the 1 oz $50 proof from West Point and the 1/2 oz $25 proof from Philadelphia. Each displays the classic Augustus Saint-Gaudens design, enhanced by the sharp detail and mirrored fields expected of proof coinage.
This year stands apart because it is the only time the U.S. Mint released a two-coin proof set containing just the 1 oz and 1/2 oz denominations. A total of 143,398 sets were produced, after which the Mint expanded proof offerings into four-coin sets. That makes the 1987 issue a one-year-only format with a clearly defined mintage figure of 143,398.
It is also the only set combining two different mint origins: the 1 oz coin bears the “W” mintmark of West Point, while the 1/2 oz coin has no mintmark, indicating Philadelphia.
