The 1845-D $5 Liberty Head half eagle was struck at the Dahlonega Mint in Georgia during the early Southern branch mint era, processing local gold from the 1829 discoveries. Mintage: 90,629 pieces—a moderate output for Dahlonega, making it one of the more "available" issues from that facility compared to true rarities like the 1861-D.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse shows a coronet Liberty head ("LIBERTY" inscribed), while the reverse features a heraldic eagle with shield, arrows, and olive branch.
It's relatively common in circulated grades (VF–EF), with strong strikes for a branch mint coin—better than many later 1840s Dahlonega issues. About Uncirculated (AU) pieces are obtainable, but true Mint State examples are scarce; gems (MS64+) are extremely rare, with the finest known being a PCGS/CAC MS65 (ex-Norweb/Bass/Pogue collections, prized for rich orange-gold color and surfaces).
