CAC. A crusty 1859 San Francisco mint $20 Liberty Double Eagle. The "Granite Lady Hoard" refers to a cache of U.S. gold coins, primarily Liberty Head Double Eagles ($20 pieces) and some other denominations from the 1850s to 1880s, that were stored in the vaults of the second San Francisco Mint—nicknamed the "Old Granite Lady" or "Granite Lady" for its sturdy granite construction. This building, completed in 1874, famously survived the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the subsequent massive fires that destroyed much of the city and most other financial institutions, while holding vast reserves (including about a third of the nation's gold at the time). A small group of these older coins, many minted at San Francisco from California Gold Rush-era gold and left untouched in secure vaults for over a century, were later rediscovered and entered the numismatic market around the early 2000s (with some releases noted in 2016); they were certified by NGC with the special "Granite Lady Hoard" pedigree, highlighting their unique provenance as survivors of one of America's worst natural disasters and symbols of resilience tied to the Gold Rush and the mint's role in processing Western gold.
