December 1, 1779 Colonial Massachusetts 4 Shilling MA-272 PMG 64
This is a handsome and remarkably well-preserved note, No. 8116, that owes its exceptional survival to sheer good fortune rather than heavy circulation. In contrast to most of its surviving contemporaries from the December 1779 Massachusetts emission, this example stands far above typical circulated grades. It offers striking visual superiority over many recent offerings from the same series. The engraved face design—masterfully printed from a copper plate created by Paul Revere—displays exceptional detail and eye appeal, highlighted by the iconic rising sun vignette. Adding to its allure is the bold, handsome manuscript signature of Jonathan Brown positioned below the obligation text. This note is clearly superior to the last example of this emission and denomination —a specimen unlikely to be approached by any other known surviving peer.
