1799/8 $1 Draped Bust Silver Dollar PCGS AU-58 BB-141, 15 Reverse Stars CAC

Pop of 2 with 7 finer for the variety at CAC. We've traced this extraordinary specimen back to the FUN show of January 2009. Back then, it was offered as lot 3946 by Heritage and descirbed as "...Late die state, as Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV. The die engraver mistakenly engraved two extra stars, creating a reverse die with 15 stars above the eagle. To cover his mistake, he greatly enlarged the first and last clouds, covering most of the stars at the upper left and right, although leaving two tiny points visible at the bottom of each cloud. To attribute the reverse, it is unnecessary to actually count the stars. Simply look for the two large clouds for a positive identification. The reverse die was used for this overdate variety, and also for B-13, BB-151 variety with a normal date. Die state analysis shows that the overdate was struck after the normal date, the opposite of what numismatic tradition suggests. This frosty near-Mint example has brilliant silver surfaces and sharp design features. Aside from faint diagonal adjustment marks at the center of the obverse, the overall surfaces are exceptional in quality. This is an important and attractive early dollar.
