The 1896-O Barber quarter, often eclipsed by the celebrated 1896-S key date, is comparably scarce in high grades, making it a hidden gem for collectors. PCGS population data (as of 8/25) reveals the 1896-O’s rarity: only five coins are graded MS66 (one with a Plus designation) and two finer, compared to three MS66 coins for the 1896-S with none finer. In MS65, the 1896-O is rarer still, with just nine coins certified versus ten for the 1896-S. This near-Gem example, graded MS64 (population: 11), showcases a bold strike and satiny luster across both sides. The reverse is virtually pristine, while the obverse exhibits only minor, grade-consistent grazes that do not detract from its exceptional preservation. As an early New Orleans Mint issue, the 1896-O is seldom encountered in such high quality and commands a substantial premium across all grades. With only 16 coins graded finer by PCGS (but few without various degrees of toning), this quarter is a standout for collectors seeking rarity and quality in the Barber series.
