The 1879-O Morgan Silver Dollar, graded PCGS MS-64, is a standout example from the New Orleans Mint’s second year of Morgan production. Struck during a period of high output yet spotty quality control, most 1879-O dollars entered circulation quickly. PCGS has graded 2,528 as MS64 with 755 finer.
This coin exhibits frosty luster and original reddish-orange toning with a sharp, well-centered strike that fully defines Liberty’s hairlines, ear, and cap, as well as the eagle’s breast feathers and wing details—traits not always seen on early New Orleans issues. The surfaces are remarkably clean for the grade, showing only minor, scattered contact marks and no serious abrasions or hairlines.
As an MS-64 from a mint historically plagued by bag marks and weak strikes, this piece ranks among the finer survivors of the date. It combines bold cartwheel flash, crisp detail, and excellent eye appeal, representing the 1879-O issue at its near-Gem best.
