The 1886-S Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the better dates of the Morgan series. NGC has graded 795 as MS64 with 208 finer.
Struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of only 750,000 pieces—the lowest of any regular-issue Morgan to that date—most examples never entered circulation and were stored for decades in Treasury bags, preserving those coins for future generations of collectors.
Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse portrays a left-facing Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap encircled by “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” the date 1886, and thirteen stars. The reverse displays a bold eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, and the famous “S” mintmark beneath the wreath.
This particular example, certified NGC MS-64, is choice uncirculated: it retains brilliant cartwheel luster, shows crisp details from Liberty’s hair to the eagle’s breast feathers, and has only minor, scattered contact marks that keep it just shy of gem status—making it an ideal combination of rarity, condition, and eye appeal for Morgan Dollar collectors.
