France, Provincial. County of Angoulême. Time of Guillaume V-Hugues I. Circa 1170-1245. BI Denier. La Marche mint. Struck in the name of Louis VII, VIII, or IX. Obverse: + LODOICVS (S horizontal) (Louis), cross pattée in a beaded circle. Reverse: + EGOLISSIME (Ss horizontal) (Angoulême), three annulets and a crescent around a small cross. PCGS has graded 1 as XF40 with none finer. Poey d'Avant 2663; Duplessy, Féodales 947; Roberts 4361.
