CAROLINGIANS. Louis 'le Pieux' (the Pious). As Emperor Louis I, 814-840. Louis was the son of Charlemagne and was co-emperor with him until his death in 1814. AR Denier. Milan mint. Struck 822-840.
Obverse: + HLVDOVVICVS IMP, dross pattée; pellets in quarters. Reverse: XPISTIΛNΛ RELIGIO, temple façade. Literature: Coupland-Group F; Class 3; Money Group B; Depeyrot 1179. PCGS has graded one as AU50 with one finer (AU53). The last auction appearance of this rare issue was in June of 2020, when the sole AU53 piece sold via Heritage.
