Token - 1872-Dated G50C California Gold Charm, B-505 Washington Head NGC MS64PL - Tied for Finest Known!
Here’s a beautiful octagonal gold charm from Old California to add to your collection. The obverse presents an attractive rendering of George Washington’s head facing left which is encircled by thirteen stars. Below is found the date 1872. The legend on the reverse reads CALIFORNIA CHARM above and below, with ½ GOLD centered within the legend.
This example is tied for Finest Known of this issue. NGC has graded one as MS64PL with none finer. NGC has graded 8 as mint state, 2 as Prooflike, and 1 as Deep Prooflike. This MS64PL example offered by AUCM is the highest grade, tied with 1 piece graded MS64 by NGC. However, this prooflike piece has that special look that mint state tokens do not. Also, there is only one specimen graded by PCGS (MS64). Musante GW-820, Baker-505.
