Tiberius. AD 14-37 AV Aureus. Rare issue struck at the Lugdunum (Lyon, France) Mint, c. 14-15 CE. (7.79g) RIC 1; C 45; Calico 307. Obverse: TI CAESAR DIVI – AVG F AVGVSTVS Laureate head right. Reverse: TR POT – XVII Tiberius standing in slow quadriga right, holding laurel branch and eagle-tipped sceptre. In exergue, IMP VII. The message on the obverse, TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVTVS (“Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of divine Augustus”), was vital in signifying transition of power in the early Roman Empire. The title helped Tiberius to publicize his inherited right to rule, as Augustus’ heir and deified first Roman Emperor.
