Ancient Rome - 402-450 AD Theodosius II Miliarensis AR NGC NGC MS (Star)
Exceptional grade (MS*) and perfect strike and surface. The denomination in later years degenerated from the denarius to a "light" miliarensis. It's measurement is 23mm (larger than others), and weighs in at 4.23 gm. It was struck at the Constantinople mint, sometime between AD 408-423. On the obverse we see D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, with a pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing left, as seen from a frontal viewpoint. The reverse features GLORIA-ROMANORVM, with Theodosius II standing facing, with a nimbate head left, raising his right hand, featuring globe in his left hand; * in left field, with word CON is in exergue. The surfaces are largely untoned with slight darker coloration within the devices.
This coin is certified by NGC as Mint State with a * for superlative eye appeal. The strike is a perfect 5 of 5; the surface is a perfect 5 of 5. As of the last confidential census report, NGC has recorded 10 coins graded in total. There is only one (1) example graded MS* with none finer - this is the finest certified to-date. The NGC census report does not distinguish the degree of strike and surface, nor do they indicate which coins are struck in Fine Style. The surfaces are amazing, since this coin is approximately 1,600 years old, and the devices are full and as struck. It is completely well centered and shows abundant luster within the devices.
Last October two examples appeared in European auctions. The first was in Germany and was remarkably similar to the present example. It realized $5,869 after EUR conversion. The second occurred five days later in Switzerland, was a similar coin, and fetched $4,371 after EUR conversion. This goes to show how popular they now are and fortunately for us, such information isn't readily available to most buyers and sellers, and we were able to acquire this coin for a modest fee less than those auction prices.
