So-Called Dollar - 1892 Columbian Exposition Liberty Head, SC$1 Aluminum HK-222 NGC MS67PL
Here’s a truly striking piece crafted and produced for the World Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. NGC has graded one as MS67 Prooflike, with none finer.
This So-Called Dollar was designed by Adolph Weyl and engraved by Wilhelm Mayer, whose W.M. initials are located below Liberty's neck. It was produced in Stuttgart, Germany, by Wilhelm Mayer Metallwaren Fabrik. The obverse was inspired by the ever-present standard silver (Morgan) dollar of its day.
Obverse: Liberty head facing left in high relief with stars around outer circle. Date of 1892 is below. Reverse: Columbus landing scene with multiple figures. Legend: "Dedicated To The American People in Honor of The 400th Anniversary Of The Discovery of America" around rim above. Below is "United We Stand Divided We Fall." Inside inner circle below is "1492." HK-222. Eglit-51. R5.
