The 1851-O $10 Liberty Head Eagle, designed by Christian Gobrecht, exemplifies mid-19th-century American gold coinage. NGC has graded 249 as AU53 with 502 finer.
Its obverse shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," encircled by 13 stars. Her hair flows in curls, tied with a ribbon. The reverse features a bold heraldic eagle clutching olive branch and arrows, with "TEN D." and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" above and below.
Minted in New Orleans ("O" mark), this eagle arose amid the California Gold Rush. The 1848 discovery fueled a mintage of 263,000 1851-O coins, supporting commerce and westward expansion. Produced in the antebellum South, it is a wonderful relic of New Orleans and its historic mint.
Graded NGC AU-53, it displays light wear on Liberty’s cheek and the eagle’s wings, yet preserves strong detail and luster. As a No Motto type—lacking "IN GOD WE TRUST"—it captures the pre-1866 design, cherished by collectors for its historical authenticity and sharp strike.
