1900-dated Bryan $ Gorham Mfg Co 16-to1 Silver Ingot, SCH-15 NGC AU58
1900-dated William Jennings Bryan (struck c.1896?). 16 TO 1 Ingot. Cast Coin Silver. 18 x 42 mm. 26 grams. Schornstein-15. NGC AU-58.
Splendid antique silver gray surfaces reveal no post-production blemishes. Exceptionally well made for a cast piece. Additionally, the surfaces are overall smooth with minimal disturbance to the texture (as made). The design elements are boldly rendered, and the eye appeal is exceptional in all regards. Fred Schornstein (Bryan Money, 2001) describes this type as "very rare" and, indeed, this is the second finest example of the type that we've seen (MS62 finest). Heritage sold an "uncirculated" example (uncertified) on June 5, 2020 for $3,120 - cited for reference.
A product of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, this 16 to 1 ingot favors the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan who favored a bimetallic economic standard with a silver-to-gold ratio of 16 to 1. His opponent in the 1900 Presidential race, William McKinley, was a proponent of the gold standard that was in effect since 1873 and favored big business.
