Strike 4/5; Surface 5/5 (3.50g). Silver denarius struck posthumously by the master of the mint Q. Voconius Vitulus, circa 40BCE. The obverse features DIVI IVLI to the right of the head of Caesar with the Etruscan gold crown. On the reverse Q. VOCONIVS / VITVLVS is featured around with a bull calf standing.
3.50 g. Cr. 526/2. Syd. 1132. Rarely encountered with such an excellent postumous portrait. Slight stamping weaknesses.
Provenance: Acquired on September 8, 1907 by Leo Hamburger, Frankfurt. The amazing representation of a calf on the back of this denarius can be explained simply by a pun: Vitulus means bull calf.
