Those issues first struck by Christopher Bechtler Sr. consist of four major varieties, three quarter eagles and a half eagle (with an extremely rare and uncollectible variety of half eagle). Each depicts the legend C. BECHTLER, ASSAYER and the description RUTHERFORD or RUTHERFORD COUNTY. The reverse distinguishes the denomination, carat value and legend NORTH CAROLINA GOLD, but bears no designated weight. Analysis shows the coins are 30 grains to the dollar at 20 carats. The United States Government standard in 1831 was 27 grains to the dollar at 21 carats. A total of $109,732 is reported to have been struck into coins during the first through the third periods.
