The ancient city of Chalcis (also Chalkis or Khalkis) located in eastern Greece on the strait of Evripos near Athens, is currently the capital of Euboea. The ancient city, which was inhabited by Ionians, was a central business and industrial center. During the 8th and 7th centuries BC, Chalcis established colonies in Macedonia (giving its name to the peninsula of Chalcidice) and in Sicily. Therefore it was successively an Athenian, Macedonian, and Roman possession.
