KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BCE. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.59g, 12 h), Arados or Tarsos (?), struck circa 325/4-324/3. The obverse features the Head of Athena facing to the right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. The reverse features the inscription AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ around Nike standing front, head facing to the left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to lower right is a wreath. Price 3456 (Sidon). This is a Very rare issue struck on an extraordinary flan. A lustrous, sharp and interesting coin displaying significant mint bloom. The reverse struck slightly off center.
Ex Leu 5, 27 October 2019, 67 and previously from a European collection, formed before 2005.
While the early 'Sidon' staters (Price 3456-3466) have recently been reattributed to Tarsos, this coin differs significantly in style. Furthermore, it was struck from the same obverse die as the 'Arados' stater in Leu Web Auction 4, 24 June 2018, 152, suggesting, thus, that both coins were issued by the same mint.
