2016-W 50C Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar 1/2oz Centennial NGC SP69 First Releases
The United States Mint issued the 2016-W 1/2 oz. gold half dollar to commemorate the Centennial of Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar. This design is one of the most beautiful to ever grace United States coinage. Only 65,512 of them were produced at the U.S. Mint in West Point, New York. This Early Releases specimen is graded SP69 by NGC and is housed in a special 100th anniversary holder. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $1,450.00 in SP69.
The coin was struck with 1/2 oz. of .9999 fine gold. The obverse presents Weinman’s design of a Walking Liberty, long considered to have been inspired by the French Sower coinage of Oscar Roty. LIBERTY encircles the beautiful Walking Liberty design, which includes the rising sun. The reverse presents a powerful eagle standing upon a rocky base. Everything about Weinman’s design is iconic and simply stunning.
