Augustus Saint-Gaudens, whose famed obverse design of the $20 double eagle of 1907-1933 graces the $50 Gold American Eagle offered by AUCM.
The obverse of this $50 Gold American Eagle replicates Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ beautiful and renowned Striding Liberty double eagle $20 gold piece, commonly called the ‘Saint’ as an homage to the famed sculptor-medalist. The Saint was created upon the insistence and with the collaboration of President Theodore Roosevelt and was produced from 1907-1933. When producing this $50 Gold American Eagle, the U.S. Mint employed the original bronze cast in order to reflect Saint-Gaudens’ original vision. From 1986 to 2021, the reverse, which was crafted by sculptor Miley Busiek, presented an eagle carrying an olive branch hovering above a nest within which is a second eagle and their hatchlings.
