2009 $20 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle NGC MS70
This 2009 Ultra-High Relief issue is a reprise of a stunning and historic rarity: the double-thick small diameter patterns crafted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens back in 1907. There are only two of those patterns that exist today, and they are kept in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Those patterns weigh the same as a regular $20 double eagle, but were struck in the diameter of the $10 gold eagle. Therefore, they are thicker and smaller in diameter than the typical double eagle. This offering, the 2009 version, is different from those original patterns because the rim is slightly flattened and does not have the sharp, knife edge seen on the originals.
The finish on this modern 2009 version is also different from the brilliant proof finish upon those original patterns, as they have more of a satiny appearance to them. Due to the greater depth of the designs, this Ultra-High relief exhibits a medallic appearance quite different from that of a normal coin. This striking, unique look adds to the appeal of this 2009 coin. NGC has graded 10,913 of this issue as MS70. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $3,600.00 in MS70.
