The Gold Eagle coin program from the U.S. Mint, which debuted in 1986, is among the world's most popular gold coin programs. The gold coins are offered in 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 1oz sizes, with respective face values of $5, $10, $25, and $50. The year 1995 saw in increase in mintage of over 10,000 pieces from the preceding year. However, NGC Coin Explorer writes, “Unfortunately, quality was not good this year”—for just 4.4 percent of the 3,608 pieces submitted to NGC were awarded the grade of MS70. In total, there are 159 graded MS70 by NGC.
The Gold American Eagle coins were modeled after the masterwork of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, his $20 double eagle that was struck from 1907 to 1933. Photo: PCGS Coinfacts.
