Here’s a stunning specimen of the First Year of Issue of the popular Gold American Eagle series. Imagine owning this piece, holding it in your hand…
The obverse of this $50 Gold American Eagle reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ attractive and celebrated double eagle $20 gold piece, often called the ‘Saint’ in his honor. The Saint was created upon the insistence and with the collaboration of President Theodore Roosevelt. The classic ‘Saint’ was minted from 1907-1933. NGC has graded 884 of the 1986 issue as MS70.
When producing this $50 Gold American Eagle, the U.S. Mint employed the original bronze cast in order to present Saint-Gaudens’ original vision. From 1986 to 2021, the reverse, which was designed and engraved by sculptor Miley Busiek, displayed an eagle carrying an olive branch hovering above a nest within which is a second eagle and hatchlings.
