1945-S 10C Mercury Head Dime NGC MS68 (color-!!!)
Would you like a dramatic piece with thick brush strokes of iridescent colors on both sides? Well, then we suggest that you take a careful look of the photos of this beauty provided by AU Capital Management. NGC has graded 374 as MS68 with 17 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $875.00 in MS68.
The 1945-S Mercury dime was extensively hoarded, as it was the last issue of the popular series. Because of that, Mint State examples are plentiful. However, for reasons unknown to us, the dimes of 1945-S often are seen with beautiful, colorful toning. Gems are easily available, however the number of examples with Full Bands is quite small.
Ron Guth writes, “In 1945, the San Francisco Mint produced Dimes with either normal-sized or small-sized mintmarks. The smaller of the two mintmarks is so tiny that it became known as the Micro-S variety. The normal-sized mintmark appears to be the more common of the two varieties, although neither one is scarce. Both are readily available in Mint State.” This offering from AUCM carries the larger ‘S’ mintmark.
