View of the Free City of Danzig (1920-1939).
The Free City of Danzig was a semi-autonomous city-state that lasted from 1920 to 1939. It consisted of the Baltic Sea port of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) and around 200 towns and villages. It was created in accordance with the terms of Article 100 of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles after the conclusion of World War I.
The Free City included the city of Danzig and numerous other towns, villages, and settlements that were primarily German-inhabited. Per the Treaty, the region was to remain separate from the post-war Weimar German Republic as well as from the newly independent and reconstituted Polish Republic. The Free City was under the protection of the League of Nations and put into a binding customs union with Poland. The Free City of Danzig was created in order to give Poland access to a substantial seaport.
