David Hall writes, “The 1929-D has a relatively low mintage, and, along with the 1929-S and 1933-S, is the last Walking Liberty half dollar (with the exception of the very low mintage 1938-D) that sells for more than its silver value in the lowest grades. It is somewhat scarce in the higher circulated grades and definitely scarce in mint state.”

It was after a layoff of eight years that production of half dollars resumed at the Denver Mint in 1929. However, demand for half dollars in the Midwest remained limited; therefore, many of these coins were not circulated until the mid-1930s. Similar to the Denver-produced dimes and quarters of 1929, small hoards of Mint State pieces were traded for years afterward.
