1926 $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle PCGS MS66 (CAC) Top CAC-!
Only two (2) endorsd by CAC, an neither ever offered for public sale at auction, according to our research. The present specimen displays a wonderful peach orange layered over satin-rich yellow surfaces. There is a cartwheel luster evident, more on the obverse - less so on the reverse. A line break in the luster on the reverse upper right field serves to identify this coin for future generations.
In lower grades, the 1926 is usually grouped together with the 1925-D to 1929 issues as the common dates. At this grade, and with the CAC endorsement, it's something entirely different. The 1908 $2.50 is common with 22 CAC examples extant. For those MS66 issues struck 1925 and on, there are only five (5) in all. (2) 1925; (2) 1926 and (1) 1927.
CAC values these coins at $16,900. The only auction records available for comparison is for the 1925-D and 1927. One of the two 1925-D coins last sold in 2011 for $21,850 in the Heritage Chicago ANA sale. As for the 1927, here, the same coin - one with a couple of obvious marks on the central devices and fields and a small black spot at the direct center of the obverse - has changed hands three times. First, in 2007 for $11,500 (prior to the CAC endorsement), then again in August of 2011 for $20,700 and lastly in 2015 for $14,688 in the Eugene Gardner sale.
