1924 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS66
We are pleased to offer for your consideration this stunning example of the 1924 Saint-Gaudens $20 double eagle. This specimen would be the perfect type coin for a collection of U.S. gold. Gold specialist David Akers writes, "The 1924 is the most common issue of the Saint-Gaudens series. In fact, it is by far the most common issue of the four 20th century gold series....the typical 1924 is very sharply struck and fully frosty with very good to excellent luster. The color is usually a light to medium orange gold..." This piece features beautiful coloration, a sharp strike, and booming luster.
Numismatic scholar and art critic Cornelius Vermeule writes, "The double eagle is perhaps the most majestic coin ever to bear our national imprint. The Liberty striding forward is as grand in miniature as the Hellenistic Victory of Samothrace on a heroic scale. The eagle in flight against the sun on the reverse achieves complete domination of motion and expanding vista over the confines of a tiny tondo. Although the authorities at the Mint flattened the relief to facilitate striking and handling, this coin has remained a forceful demonstration that modern, mechanical coinage need in no way be pedestrian." Discussing both Saint-Gaudens' $10 eagle along with his $20 double eagle, Vermeule writes, "Both coins seems as modern a century after they were conceived as any issues, American or otherwise, produced in the past generation, and compared with what has been tolerated heretofore in the United States, both burst as artistic skyrockets in the horizons of our academic creativity."
Jeff Garrett writes, "Much of Europe was in financial distress around this time [1924] and large quantities of this [date] were sent overseas for international banking transactions. Many sat there for decades and large numbers continue to find their way back to the United States each year....the abundance of coins available makes this a great candidate for a type coin of the issue." Despite the fact that 319,988 of this date has been graded by PCGS, only 125 are graded finer than MS66 (as of 2/2021), making this beautiful piece a registry coin. Wouldn't this be a perfect addition to your numismatic collection?
