Here’s an attractive coin to add to your collection. David Hall writes, “In mint state condition, the 1920 is not quite as rare as the 1918, but the two coins are about equal rarity in Gem (MS65 or better) condition. A Gem MS65 1920 is a rare coin and grades above MS65 are very rare. The 1920 is almost always very well struck. The luster is the soft satiny look of the earlier Walkers.” NGC has graded 45 as MS65 with only 12 finer.

Even though the First World War had ended in 1918, the American economy was booming well into 1920. This is reflected in the production of 6,372,000 half dollars that year. Well-worn examples of the 1920 half dollar are fairly common, while XF and AU coins are slightly scarce. Writes NGC Coin Explorer, “Mint State survivors are likewise common in the lesser grades. … there are enough coins certified as MS-65 that advanced collectors will have no trouble locating a desirable example.”
