Warm golden brown toning is found--as well as hints of green and russet--on both sides of this affordable collectible from AUCM. This is a coin that will be a cherished addition to your collection--one that you will be proud to own.
Here is an opportunity to purchase an affordable mint state example of one of America's most beautiful coins: the Standing Liberty Quarter. This coin would be perfect for a type set or collection of reasonably priced mint state quarters and other coins from America's storied past. The "Full Head" designation makes it an even more desirable example of this stunning quarter. A possible type set could include uncirculated pieces inspired by the famous numismatic collaboration between President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor-medalist Augustus Saint-Gaudens (not including the gold coins): the Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, Walking Liberty half dollar, and the Peace dollar.
Numismatic art critic and scholar Cornelius Vermeule analyzes the design of this beautiful coin: "Commonplace though it may appear now after so many years, the quarter dollar of 1916 was as revolutionary in concept as the double eagle of 1907. Saint-Gaudens had shown American die designers what could be done, and MacNeil was equipped to grasp the message of his standing or advanced Liberty and his eagle in flight. MacNeil's Liberty is presented as the Athena of the Parthenon pediments, a powerful woman striding forward, with her head and arms conveying a strong sideways motion .... The shield is emblazoned with the stars and stripes of the United States, in the heraldic form of the Great Seal, but everything about this Amazon calls to mind Greek sculpture of the period from Pheidias to Praxiteles, 450 to 350 BC....MacNeil's concept of the armed Liberty, uncovering her shield and holding an olive branch like the writing Victory of Roman triumphal reliefs such as the Columns of Trajan or Marcus Aurelius and imperial coins from Vitellius (A.D. 69) to Caracalla (A.D. 215) would have been a splendid tribute to the sentiment of the time had the artist not chosen to place her at the entrance to a star-studded dado or enclosure, resembling the walls of a private cemetery."
