David Hall writes, “In circulated grades, the 1916-D is about of equal rarity as the 1916, even though the mintage is almost twice as many coins. Both coins are much rarer, or at least sell for more, than all but a few of the dates that follow. In Gem condition, the 1916-D is slightly rarer than the 1916. Most mint state examples are well struck. Luster is the "satiny look" often seen on the earlier date Walkers.”
PCGS has graded 576 in MS64 with 452 finer.

The Denver Mint was the only one that produced over a million of the new half dollars in 1916. That was despite the fact that the necessary dies were not received in Denver until late in the year, on November 27, 1916. The 1916-D half dollars are usually well struck, better so than those produced at both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints.
Writes NGC Coin Explorer, “They make ideal type coins to illustrate this design as it debuted. Examples grading higher than MS-65 are elusive, but they are available to the more advanced collector. … All 1916-D halves display the tiny D mintmark with triangular center opening that appears to have not been used for subsequent issues.”
